Are you aware that your house may be contaminated with the filaments of a fibrous mineral which, when inhaled, can result in a grave medical condition? Take for example an asbestos tile that is about to break apart. Asbestos fibres may be exposed along the crack, and if the fibres become airborne, you might inhale those tiny fibres. If you step on the tile, the inner material could be exposed and some of the fibres could float around the air. The fibres go straight to the respiratory system and remain dormant in the lungs, causing scarring over time.

Check the condition of your asbestos tiles

In the construction industry, asbestos tile is considered one of the most durable ones. Asbestos is known for its strengthening properties, and it can produce strong and wear-and-tear resistant floors. When the building’s materials are in a very good condition, there is no imposing threat. However, if you notice that there are asbestos-containing materials that are dilapidated or are at risk of breaking, call up experts in asbestos handling immediately.

Four elements can weaken an asbestos tile: aging, heat, water, and weathering. When a material is affected by any of the four mentioned, it will be considered friable. Meaning, the item contains one percent of the fibrous mineral that is about to crumble. If you suspect that your asbestos tile is now friable, do not hesitate to send a sample to a nearby laboratory. That way, it may be analysed right away.

When is asbestos tile removal unnecessary?

When the asbestos tile is in perfect state, leave it all alone. Removing it may cause it to crack or break, thereby exposing asbestos fibres. If you are planning to conduct further remodelling or renovation in your place, do not attempt to remove asbestos tiles or any asbestos-containing material on your own. When you cut or saw an item, you might be releasing the fibres into the air. Again, when inhaled, that can lead to cancer later in life.

Simply cover and seal an asbestos tile when it requires a patch-up. Sealing is also referred to as encapsulation, where the item is treated with a bonding agent that will prevent the tiny fibres from being released into the air.

If there is any major construction project you need to be done on your property, do not hesitate to contact a professional. This is for your health and safety. Others consider employing an abatement company to dispose othe tile edges before moving on to the next phase of construction or renovation.
